Which International School is Best For You?

by BKKFamilies
Special Events

The lush growth of education centers in Bangkok is simply undeniable. International schools alone are now dominating the academic landscape at a staggering 76 schools in Bangkok alone. Perhaps the number will keep swelling as more people come to the city to make it their new home.

We know some of you do not have the luxury of time to check much less visit all these schools for the upcoming enrollment. But we do. As a matter of fact, we’re done sifting through enormous data to produce our very own “master list.”

In choosing the best international schools in Bangkok, we used a parameter which we believe reflects the preferences and financial capability of most expats and locales. So we only tried to include international schools falling in the following categories: charges somewhere between 8,000 USD to 30,000 USD  or that’s around 248,000 Thai Baht to 930,000 Thai Baht;  offers British, American or IB curriculum; and, last but not least, accessible with only light to moderate traffic.

A little caveat: It was mighty difficult to find international schools that fit all the categories, especially the last one. So we added a few with some traffic issues but these are otherwise great schools. You’ll see why.

Ready for the list? Here it is.

KIS Bangkok Reviews

For only THB347,400 – THB731,300 per year, KIS offers excellent education while following the International Baccalaureate curriculum from The Early Years to Grade 12. For young learners, it practices play-based learning all in a early-learner’s center. It puts premium on innovation, creativity and friendliness.

Conveniently located along Pracha Utit Road, Huay Kwang, it is far enough away from Sukhumvit and its hustle and bustle. If you live in the neighborhood, you can probably kiss your worries good bye.

With fees ranging from THB499,000 to THB949,800, you can enjoy a brand of education that have been tried by “many nationally and internationally influential leaders.” At Harrow, emphasis is on creating effective leaders because the times “appear ever more challenging.” The school is serious about teaching leadership under the IB curriculum all “for a better world.”

You can reach Harrow’s in about 30-minutes from the Sukhumvit/Silom area with little to no traffic. A problem is it lacks a connection to mass transit in 2018.

PAIS provides international services based upon American standards while highlighting eastern culture. It is the repository of information for more than 470 students coming from over 41 nations.

PAIS is nestled in Prawet District, 20 kilometers from the city’s center. Here the traffic is manageable and the school can be reached through various city arteries.

Brighton College Bangkok Reviews

The No. 1 education center in UK is also here in Bangkok! Brighton sets to achieve here what it has done elsewhere: provide “unmatched” education. It boasts, for one, of having a much-coveted record of turning out graduates who enter into the leading universities around the world.

The school offers the British curriculum with fees ranging from 331,000 ฿ to 702,000 ฿. This school is on the outskirts of the city (Krungthep Kreetha) where traffic is low!

New. Progressive. The largest in Bangkok.

This is what VERSO is about. Here, you can avail of a personalized educational experience under an American-based curriculum. VERSO seeks to prepare children with facing a rapidly changing world.

Located in the outskirts of Bangkok, traffic leading to VERSO is manageable.

Concordian provides IB curriculum for all its learners, meaning primary, middle and diplom It is also said to be the one and only international school using Thai, English, Chinese as main media of instruction. You also might love to read this statement from the school: “(Concordian) promotes academic excellence while nurturing young people to become moral and intellectual leaders, people of dignity, integrity and compassion, who want to make a difference in the world.” It added that this is not a mere mission statement written on paper. “It is at the heart of everything we do at Concordian.”

You can get these services for a budget ranging from 530,900 ฿ to: 816,500 ฿. That’s not all. Nestled along Bangkaew, Samutprakarn, the school is 10 minutes away from central Bangkok — away from the heavy traffic.

As has been pointed out, we included schools that have traffic issues. Some of them have got proven track records, education services that could take your traffic worries away. Besides, if you’ll take the BTS Skytrain, you would be able to beat the traffic just the same. These international schools include …

For only a fee within the THB270,000 to THB510,000 range, you can get a British and International curriculum offer at Charter — and a family!

Charter has been dubbed as “the family school,” because, here, students from youngest to oldest work happily, closely. What’s more? It has a pupil-teacher ratio that allows individual learners to receive sufficient academic attention as well as social support. The school envisions its clients to mature into responsible, independent citizens who respect others’ cultures and points of view.

We’ll, that’s a one big family you want to come home to, heavy traffic or not.

Each child is unique. This is why at St. Andrews they provide learning opportunities that’s best for a wide range of learners. This is one of the factors that has set St. Andrews apart from other international schools.

For 331,000 ฿ to 702,000 ฿ you can try its unique learning opportunities. The school employs the IB and British curricula.

With a budget ranging from 350,000 ฿ to 673,000 ฿, the American School of Bangkok aims to transform you into a critical thinker, independent learner, effective communicator, a global citizen.

It promises to deliver education services holistically that is based on an American curriculum.

The American School of Bangkok is a member of Thailand’s International Schools Association.

It is located in the city’s Metropolitan Area.

For a yearly fee ranging from: THB508,000 to THB795,000, you can experience an education that values kindness first then wisdom and good manners. Aside from offering a value-led British curriculum for both boys and girls, Kings uses the child-centered approach. It takes pride in having a fourth of its graduates going on to attend Oxford or Cambridge each year. If you are scared of traffic though, be prepared. King’s is in the Ratchada–Rama 3 area right in the middle of the city.

Magic is among the schools which put premium to nurturing the body, the mind and the soul.

“They are of equal importance,” Magic says in a statement.

Its greater goal though is to get its learners to “contribute to the betterment of the world.” Magic aims to do this through a “challenging program” framed under the IB curriculum.

All that for only a cost within the 343,800 THB to 549,800 THB range.

It is a leading choice of more than 1,600 students from scores of different countries. It offers IB programs for primary, middle and senior high school. IB curriculum schools like NIST are chosen by more students and parents because, for one, their programs conform to high standards set by the IB organization. Programs are devised by teachers not governments and hence are relevant to students regardless of country.

NIST, the first IB school in Bangkok, charges between 533,700 ฿ to 961,400 ฿.

Staying Fit in Bangkok: Easier than you think!

by BKKFamilies

Crowded, hot, congested, and overwhelming….have you ever heard these words used to describe Bangkok? With everything it has to offer, this city can present some major challenges in the wellness and outdoors space. But with proper preparation, knowledge, and some flexibility in your schedule, you and your family can stay active, healthy, and happy!

Below are some key strategies you can use to prepare awesome fitness-oriented activities for people of all ages:

1) Research your area of town.

While this may be obvious, you may surprise yourself on exactly how many places there are to explore! Having lived here for two years, Bangkok is a city that continues to “open up” in terms of wellness events, places, and outdoor areas.

Family fitness Bangkok

Spend some time getting familiar with nearby gyms, studios, and green spaces. Join several of the many Facebook groups and Meetups that occur on a daily basis all over the city. Transportation to and from these places is always one of the biggest barriers. Traffic can be a major headache so knowing the fasting routes and best times of day to go are crucial!

2) Scheduling Matters.

Just as you would with work, try creating a family fitness or activity schedule based on your research. As previously stated, getting to and from places can be a major deterrent in staying active. Unlike smaller cities Bangkok does not cater to spontaneity quite as much, as some parks or fitness centers may close early.  Synchronizing you and your family’s schedules to allow for “movement time” is very important! Check in with schedules at various gyms, studios, and see what, if any, classes are offered for children or young adults.

3) Park Time!

You may be familiar with the major parks in Bangkok—Chatuchak, Benjakitti, and Lumphini. But how about some of the parks a little further out of town? Suan Luang Rama IX is one of my personal favorites. It offers sprawling green spaces, outdoor workout equipment, beautiful scenery, and surrounding food areas. While there is no direct BTS or MRT, spending an afternoon there with your family is well worth the trip! Another personal favorite is Bang Krachao, also known as the “Green Lunge” of Bangkok. Located just across the river by boat, this area offers wonderful roads to bike, run, and has its own lovely park to explore. There are also open aired markets in the morning, creating a perfect combination of movement and food.

4) Bring the activity close to home.

If you are very pressed for time or your schedule does not allow for much exploration, consider what options are available at your own condo gym. Many facilities are well equipped with treadmills, free weights, bikes, and various exercise equipment to keep you fit and in shape.  If you are looking for help, there are many personal trainers in and around Bangkok that can come to train you, your spouse, or whole family as part of their services.

Still wondering how to stay in shape in Bangkok? Curious about personal training? Feel free to contact me here or at gabetheck@gmail.com with questions and I am happy to try to help!

Top Reasons Your Dental Health Matters

by BKKFamilies

Bangkok, Thailand, is home to dozens of hospitals giving top-of-the-line dental services.

Here you can easily say goodbye to worries about tooth decay and tooth pain which, to many kids and parents, is a primary concern.

Before we give you some of the best known Bangkok hospitals and clinics in the area of dentistry, let us talk for a while about some of the top reasons for making dental health your priority.

Who would have thought early on that the heart can be at risk for failing to brush longer or more often?

In a presentation at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions, Dr. Shogo Matsui revealed his team’s major research find that involved 682 research subjects: “poor oral health” is linked with “poorer heart health.”

Dr. Matsui, a Japanese researcher at the Institute of Biomedical and Health Sciences, said that better oral hygiene such as longer tooth brushing can lessen the risk of dying from or having a stroke, heart failure or heart attack.

In an article from the Mayo Clinic, it was claimed that the connection between oral health and heart health is still “not fully understood” though.

But it added nonetheless that oral bacteria can cause infections and inflammations which are linked to heart diseases.

Dentist in Thailand

In an article released by the kidney.org, the National Kidney Foundation spoke about what it calls the kidney disease-dental connection.

Considered a lifeline for people with kidney problems and a pioneer in scientific research, the foundation asserted that oral problems like gum infections may spread all over the body and thereby affecting kidney health.

It said that a “minor infection” could put a kidney patient in a serious condition. This is why “good dental health is important,” it said.

One could also develop or worsen an existing pneumonia because of poor oral habits, according to an article from the Mayo Clinic. It said that there are certain bacteria in the mouth which could be “pulled into your lungs.” This could cause pneumonia along with other respiratory diseases.

Ensuring oral health for our kids means more than avoiding toothaches. It can have an impact on their overall health. So make sure they follow the dos and don’ts of dental care like regular tooth brushing, flossing and avoiding or cutting down on sweets.

However, there are oral health issues that simple brushing and flossing cannot address. Here is where our top dentists in Bangkok, Thailand, can come in handy.

Our dentists can help you with serious issues like …

*Gum disease. This is a leading cause of tooth loss. It is caused by plaque and calculus that regular brushing cannot do away with.

* Crooked misaligned teeth.

* Malformation of jaws

Is Bangkok safe for kids?

by Yuki

Based on recent figures, Bangkok is relatively safe for everyone, especially children, in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In fact, it isn’t just Bangkok but the whole country that’s reportedly beating the pandemic.

In a news article early this June, Bangkok Post said that Thailand is “relatively unscathed” by COVID-19, adding that since the outbreak in January this year, only 58 deaths have been reported. The total infections were at 3,121 with 2,987 recoveries.

Other countries are not as fortunate.

According to Matthew Tostevin, Reuters’ editor for Southeast Asia, countries like Indonesia aren’t as lucky. In Jakarta, Tostevin said that by the latter part of March, there’s “1,000 more burials than usual, since records began.”

The editor said Reuters did not find a large number of unexplained deaths in Thailand.

Why is Bangkok winning? Remarkable early prevention efforts could be the key.

At the onset of the pandemic and much to his credit, Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha had directed the servicemen (navy, air force and army) to bring in medical teams to the country’s international airports to help screen passengers arriving from China, the pandemic’s epicenter.

Two international airports in Bangkok were reportedly provided with such teams as well.

In addition, there’s a pier on the Chao Phraya River close to Bangkok that has been transformed into a medical checkpoint, screening crewmen arriving from China via the Gulf of Thailand.

The early preventive action spearheaded by the government is now being credited by businessmen and the media as an essential, primary step in effectively slowing the spread of the virus.

The country can “control the situation well,” assured Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul earlier.

Aside from the preventive efforts leading to fewer COVID-19 infections and deaths, he credited the country’s testing capability as well.

“Detecting infected patients is a good sign because it shows that our system is efficient,” he said.

Also being cited as contributory to Bangkok’s growing safety are contributions from the medical community and the public cooperation in general.

“Bangkok boasts of high-quality medical services and hospitals,” wrote the Washington Times back in February, saying the country’s medical competence draws a lot of patients from European countries, the Middle East and the United States.

In fact, the country’s health care had been rated as sixth in the world, outstripping Belgium, France and Spain in a ranking by US magazine CEOWORLD.

Bangkok is not just bursting with romantic, fun and educational destinations. It is also home to more than a dozen medical facilities such as BNH (Bangkok Nursing Home) Hospital, Bumrungrad International Hospital, Samitivej Sukhumvit Hospital and Bangkok International Hospital which use cutting-edge technology in providing optimal health care.

Dr. Taweesilp Visanuyothin, spokesman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration here in Thailand, on the other hand stated during a discussion at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club that cooperation of 90 percent of the public is crucial in controlling an epidemic.

The people of Thailand gave it.

“I ascribe our success to the spirit of cooperation of the public”, said Dr. Visanuyothin.

How to Find the Best International School in Bangkok

by Yuki

When looking for the best international school, you have to understand that matter-of-factly you’re looking for a learning institution possessing a set of characteristics.

You actually want to see one that’s home to dedicated teachers, relevant teaching-learning support systems, administrators who put premium on your safety and of course a system that honors graduates with an international baccalaureate.

To make sure you find the best international school, try taking our advice as follows:

First, try to read as many articles about the international schools in or near your area. Here are some links:

Nord Anglica Schools

Second, narrow down your search by focusing on schools offering services within your budget range.

Third, make an onsite visit. There’s simply no better way other than to check things out firsthand to find the best while making sure you get a great deal with your money.

During your field visit, consider the following.

1) Learner’s needs and preferences. If the learner loves hands-on learning activities, enrolling in a school that clings to traditional, teacher-centered methods like lectures is simply going to be counterproductive. Find out what the school offers toward meeting your unique needs, styles or preferences. Is it blended learning you want? Does differentiated learning work well for you? A teacher worth her salt should be able to tailor her instruction to suit such peculiarities. Do look beyond the glowing reviews, the stylish building architecture and the smiles on the poster-ad. In the main, learners are developed by teaching methodologies.

2) Facilities, computers, the works. Studies show that children of the 21st century learn better with gadgets and apps. At first glance, shutting off these tools during learning seem reasonable; it may lead to less disruptions and quiet learning. But it could stifle the young learner’s creativity and remove a potentially learning support they are already adept with. When choosing a school, don’t be taken instantly by the amenities especially when it has got nothing to do with your aim. If the facility you need for your specific, unique learning goal is available, do check it out first whether it’s accessible, functional and up-to-date before you exclaim, “eureka!”

3) The location. A school might have the best in terms of facilities and teaching staff. But if the location eventually takes you on a daily traffic grind, it’s probably time to think of an alternative.

4) Security. Bullying is a serious threat to your or your kid’s education. All positive school qualities are set to nought when administrators treat bullying with “kid’s glove.” This scourge can inflict irreparable damage not only on the educational performance of younger learners. Worse, it could affect other areas of their lives including their mental and emotional health. So be sure the school has a strong anti-bullying policy and that implementation is consistent before signing in.

5) Track record. As in many other fields of activity, we often see the best through previous accomplishments. So ask the school where it’s graduates are? Are they better off? Does the school even track its former students to see how their doing?

6) Try chatting with the educators. As we have pointed out, the best school is home to dedicated teachers. These education front liners are considered by research community as the single biggest factor impacting education. They either make or break the school’s track record.

Finding the best is indeed easier said than done especially with school administrators and their ads making overlapping or contradicting claims.

So be tough and unrelenting during your search.

One final word: Any international school might be hyped as runaway success by anybody. Then again, what’s indeed best for them might not be the best for you as well.

The Best of the Best – Fun Learning Ideas in Bangkok!

by BKKFamilies

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s never a more crucial time to teach kids about the pursuit of happiness and staying optimistic than in any other point in recent history.

Sounds like a tough assignment, huh? Well, you could do all that simply by going on a vacation! Destination? Bangkok.

Months into the pandemic, this stunning tourism center is gaining back some normalcy. Sooner or later, you and your kids could start packing to enjoy these wholesome destinations Bangkok has to offer while learning indispensable life lessons.

Khlong Lad Mayom Floating Market

Floating Market with kids

Selling foodstuff is among the main sources of income by people along the river. The products, either cooked or raw, are lined up on boats.

Like anybody, these merchants aren’t immune to the disease but they are persistent to make a living. While savoring the local delicacies, let your kid learn from the locales the value of resilience as well as courage.

The sides of the canal also have food for sale including desserts an sea food. Clothes are also up for grabs.

Of course, kids don’t simply like to gawk at boats. Let them ride on ’em too all for a minimal cost. Don’t forget to wear life vests … Another important life lesson!

Flow House Bangkok

It isn’t recommended to bathe on the canal. Not for anything else but this part of the river is mainly for trade.

So if you want to cool it down, try Flow House Bangkok. Here in the middle of the city, you can try out surfing on the Flowrider while the young ones could frolick at the kiddie pool. No need to go out of town.

Tired? Simply head to the Flowbar nearby where beers and milkshakes are available.

Dream World

Dream World for kids

Whatever your age, there is a nice, new world waiting for you out here in … Dream World! Have you tried the Viking? The Flying Carpet? The Skycoaster?  Bet you haven’t even heard about the Hurricane?  All these are meant for those in “pursuit of happiness” in a rather scary kind of way.

For the kids and the young at heart, the place has a sightseeing train, bumper boats, antique cars, water rides, and a lot more!

One of the favorites is Snow Town. Inside the indoor playground, who knew there’s real snow you can actually build a snowman even during summer and in, of all places, Bangkok!

VR1 Bangkok

VR1 Bangkok for families

Who said computer games are only for the couch potatoes, the young fellas trying to become obese?

VR1 Bangkok is out giving technology games a good name with its simulated, interactive dance challenges, shooting games and cooking competitions.

To reinforce your lessons on social distancing, VR1 offers numerous rooms.

When you feel hungry, the café offers yummy, affordable treats.

by BKKFamilies

Lazada makes education easy and cool again!

We always want our kids to get busy with their home projects and other stuff related to schooling. But let’s face it. From the northern tip of Thailand down to its southernmost end, parents have had ups and downs in this regard. Now, even getting them off that mobile device is turning into a major challenge. Seems like the the time wasters are on a winning streak because of … well, what’s that mobile game’s name again anyway?

Here’s the good news. Lazada is here to save the day!

Our Australian Swimming Coach has been giving swimming lessons for over 30 years. He is a tall guy who is physically strong – we know this is important as this gives a great sense of safety to both kids and adults when having swim lessons. He loves a joke and always makes sure students are laughing and enjoying the swim lessons.

Here is one review from Mr Joe, one of our recent Adult beginners…..

“I recently started swimming lessons with Ray and couldn’t be more pleased. I am an older person and somewhat nervous in the water. Ray completely put me at my ease. We discussed my fears and aims and talked everything through. Once in the water his calm instruction helped me to overcome much of my fears. In a very quick time we have achieved so much.

If you are looking for somebody to help you learn or improve, look no further, Ray will sort you out!”

We start Swimming Lessons from 3 years of age up to Adults. You are never too old to earn to swim. Currently our oldest student is a Grandmother here in Thailand who now wants to overcome her fear of the water so she can enjoy time with her Grandkids. She is swimming fantastically. You can learn to swim too.

Swimming lessons can be 30minute sessions for younger kids and hour sessions for older kids and adults. Be advised that most Non-Swimmers will take at 10-20 hours of swim lessons to progress to satisfactory level of safety.

Our High Level Swimming Training Program is for developing strong swimmers. This may be for pure enjoyment, fitness or Swimming Competitions. School Swim Competitions are our specialty. We can improve your Childs level of Swimming so they can be enjoying their training, competitions and hopefully sometimes winning.

Swimming Lessons – Package options of 5, 10 or 20 sessions.
